The LoadDown - 03/08/2010 - Final Fantasy II!

New on the downloadable console circuit this week...

WiiWare -- Two games this week, both of decent quality it appers.  Max & The Magic Marker allows players to draw onscreen to help Max reach his platforming goals; the nature of the objects drawn isn't really taken into account, but size and "weight" of the applied ink affect the physics involved.  Dracula - Undead Awakening is a macabre action title in the venerable Robotron:2084 mold, casting the player as a vampire hunter wielding serious firepower, and should be a little more playable on the Wii than on the iPhone where it originated.

Wii Virtual Console -- One big title this week, Square-Enix's classic SNES title Final Fantasy II (which was Final Fantasy IV in Japan, preserving the confusing US numbering of the early series entries.)  I played through this one over a Thanksgiving weekend back in the day, and it's still a solid old-school JRPG with some dramatic story turns.

DSiWare -- Four new titles this week, two of which are games.  Elemental Masters is a fantasy strategy/role-playing card game.  4 TRAVELLERS - Play Spanish is a Spanish-language vocabulary-building game/tutor.  Dracula - Undead Awakening comes to the DS as well (see above).  And Flips: The Bubonic Builders is another young readers' book from the Too Ghoul for School series, adapted to the DS courtesy of Electronic Arts.

XBox Live Arcade -- Toy Soldiers debuted this week -- it's a military action/strategy game that combines tower defense setup with direct control of individual units when micromanagement is called for.  The game has a playful period visual style, evoking the feel of WWI-era toys and combat; the free trial mode offers just enough of a taste to tempt purchase.

PS3 on PSN -- Nothing new arrived for the PS3 last week, but Mega Man 10 is scheduled to be up this Thursday.
